Telegram Money Wallet: How It Works, Fees and Walt Explained
Telegram is rolling out Money, its built-in crypto wallet. Explore chat transfers, five daily transfers with network fees covered, wallet recovery and the difference between Money and Walt.
Telegram is rolling out Money, a built-in crypto wallet that brings transfers into your chats. It supports sending GRAM, receiving funds through a wallet address or QR code, and viewing digital collectibles. Telegram covers the network fee for your first five transfers each day.
The launch puts a wallet alongside everyday messaging. Here is where to find Money, how the fee allowance works, and what happens to Walt, the service previously called Wallet.
What is Telegram Money?
Money is Telegram's new native, non-custodial wallet. Non-custodial means you control the wallet's keys. Recovery is part of setting it up, rather than something to leave until you change phones.
Pavel Durov confirmed the gradual rollout, initially to a selected group of users. Availability is still expanding, so two people using Telegram may see different wallet options.
For a regular Telegram user, the practical change is the entry point: sending crypto can begin inside a conversation, much like opening the attachment menu to share a photo.
How to open Money and send crypto
Once Money is available on your account, start from a chat:
- Open a Telegram conversation with the person you want to pay.
- Tap the attachment icon and choose Money.
- Follow the wallet setup prompts if this is your first visit.
- Enter the amount and review the recipient and any displayed fee before confirming.
You can also look for Money in Telegram's settings or main menu. The exact placement can vary by app. If it has not appeared, the gradual rollout may explain the difference.
Durov's Code's launch walkthrough includes a closer look at the wallet screens.
Are Telegram Money transfers free?
Telegram pays the network fee for the first five transfers each day. After that allowance, a network fee applies.
The fee wording in Telegram's wallet interface makes the daily limit explicit. It does not establish a fixed dollar price for later transfers.
For example, if you make three transfers in a day, those fit within the five-transfer allowance. A sixth transfer falls outside it. Check the fee shown in the wallet before approving.
The allowance concerns transfer network fees. It should not be read as a promise that crypto purchases, exchange rates or every other wallet operation are free.
Face ID, QR codes and collectibles
Money's launch includes several tools for everyday wallet use:
- Access protection: Face ID or a separate passcode.
- Receiving funds: a personal deposit address and QR code.
- Collectibles: a dedicated area for NFTs and other collectible assets.
- Recovery: a recovery phrase, with an optional encrypted backup.
Open Keys & Backup to find your recovery phrase. Keep it private: someone who has it can control the wallet. A passcode protects access on a device; the recovery phrase serves a different purpose when restoring access.
Money vs Walt: what changed?
Money is the new native Telegram wallet. Walt is the existing service formerly called Wallet.
Walt's official announcement says the rename took effect on September 28, 2026. Existing accounts, funds and wallet addresses remain in place. Users do not need to create a new account or move assets because of the rebrand.
Walt is no longer accessed through Telegram's settings, but remains available through its official Walt bot. Its existing crypto services continue separately.
Crypto purchases within Money are processed through Walt. That connection does not make the two wallets interchangeable: check which product you are using when buying, receiving or sending assets.
Why this matters for Telegram users
Money reduces the distance between a conversation and a crypto transfer. Someone can discuss a payment and start it from the same chat, while the daily fee allowance gives occasional senders a clear starting point.
The rollout also makes the names worth learning: Money for the new built-in wallet, Walt for the established service under its new brand.
